What is ISO 42001 certification?
ISO/IEC 42001:2023 is the international standard that sets out the requirements for implementing, maintaining, and improving an Artificial Intelligence Management System (AIMS). Published by ISO and IEC in December 2023, it is the first certifiable standard designed specifically for organizations that develop, provide, or use AI systems.
Unlike a technical guideline on AI models, ISO 42001 addresses the overall governance of the AI lifecycle: policies, impact assessment, data management, transparency, and third-party relationships. Certification demonstrates to customers, partners, and regulators that the organization actively manages the risks AI can create for individuals, groups, and society, rather than adopting it without oversight.

Responsible governance
Establishes clear policies, roles, and responsibilities for deciding how artificial intelligence is developed, acquired, and used within the organization.
Impact assessment
Requires identifying and assessing the consequences an AI system can have on individuals, groups, and society, not just on the business.

What is ISO 42001 certification?
It is the first certifiable international standard for AI management systems (AIMS), published by ISO/IEC in December 2023. It certifies that an organization systematically identifies, assesses, and manages the risks of its AI systems, including their impact on individuals and society.
Which companies can get ISO 42001 certified?
Any organization that develops, provides, or uses artificial intelligence systems, regardless of size or sector: technology companies, financial services, healthcare, government, or any other industry that integrates AI into its processes or products.
How long is an ISO 42001 certificate valid?
An ISO 42001 certificate is valid for 3 years, subject to annual surveillance audits. At the end of the cycle, a recertification audit is carried out.
